This may be one of the most interesting yet simultaneously boring novels I've ever read. It doesn't provide what you'd call a "good story," but somehow it's incredibly engaging—I was constantly thinking What's going on?... What's going ON?! throughout. While it might not be the best in its genre (the game aspects definitely fade as it progresses), the kingdom-building and strategy are genuinely solid.
This novel got famous for a few key reasons: Rebirth/Return (you've seen this trope everywhere by now, but it was fresher back then),
VRMMORPG setting (one of the very first to popularize full-dive gaming that feels more real than reality—now there are hundreds copying this), and
Lord/Leader mentality (underrated but crucial—this was among the first true kingdom-building novels when the genre was still new, contrasting sharply with the solo OP protagonist stories dominating at the time). This novel was basically engineered to deliver pure dopamine hits through fast-paced, satisfying, repetitive plotlines. While that sacrifices literary quality (shallow characters, repetitive scenarios, etc.), it's exactly this style that made VRMMO, system-based, and rebirth stories insanely addictive back then—and honestly, still are today. So while I can't say I love it, I can't hate it either.
Perfect for: readers wanting a break from their current series who crave something different—just don't expect a literary masterpiece.
