Overview

Synopsis

Seventy years after the "Old World" was destroyed in a mysterious apocalypse, humanity survives in isolated underground shelters and scattered surface settlements known as the Ashlands. The world is plagued by "Heartless"—humans who have lost their minds—and mutated creatures, while "Awakened" individuals wield terrifying psychic powers at the cost of significant mental defects. Shang Jianyao, a resident of the subterranean megastructure Pangu Biology, joins the "Old Task Force" with a single goal: to find the cause of the Old World's destruction and save humanity from the Heartless disease. However, Shang Jianyao is not your average hero; he is eccentric, unpredictable, and potentially insane, often choosing to dance or offer "three favors for one price" in the middle of life-or-death battles. Alongside his team leader Jiang Baimian and their comrades, he traverses the wasteland to uncover the truth behind the 13 Kalendaria—the enigmatic deities that rule the months and the minds of the survivors.

Notes

Special Notes

Author Identity: This is the fifth major work by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, written between the first and second books of the Lord of the Mysteries series.
The "Price" System: The power system is uniquely psychological. To become "Awakened," one must pay a "Price" (a permanent mental or physical defect) in exchange for three "Favors" (powers). This leads to a cast of characters with very specific, often comedic or tragic, behavioral quirks.
Tone: While the setting is a dark post-apocalypse, the story maintains a distinct comedic undertone due to the protagonist’s bizarre behavior and the witty banter of the Old Task Force.
Ending: The novel has a definitive, high-stakes conclusion that ties up the central mystery of the apocalypse, though it is often described by fans as "bittersweet."

Librarian's Notes

Another banger by Cuttlefish, the same author as LOTM. This is the 5th work of his I've read, and while it's different from Lord of the Mysteries, the vibe is surprisingly similar. I haven't finished it yet so I can't give you the full picture, but what I've read so far is really good. Apocalypse/post-apocalyptic has always been one of my favorite genres, and this one's quickly become a favorite in that category. The writing quality is excellent—exactly what you'd expect from Cuttlefish. For those who love dystopian, post-apocalyptic settings with that mystery-thriller undertone, this might be your best choice.
