Overview

Synopsis

In a world where humanity has been driven to extinction by mysterious "Beasts," the surviving races live on floating islands in the sky. Willem Kmetsch, the last living human, awakens from a 500-year icy slumber to find a world he no longer recognizes. Unable to fight, he takes a job as a caretaker for a "weapons storehouse," only to discover that the weapons are actually young Leprechauns—fairy girls destined to wield Holy Swords and sacrifice their lives to protect the remaining civilization. As Willem becomes a father figure and mentor to these girls, particularly the eldest, Chtholly, he must grapple with the pain of his past and the inevitable heartbreak of watching his new family march toward certain death.

Librarian's Notes

A very good story involving themes like grief and sacrifice. The premise is solid, the characters are lovable. Not much to say about these types of anime in particular—they're generally hit or miss. You might love it, you might not. After all, emotional tear-jerking anime aren't for everyone. Now if I have to point out something, it's the choice of the name—it's actually brilliant. I don't want to spoil it so I won't explain, but the title itself is the main theme. This apocalypse anime focuses on survival from a different point of view. My final verdict: those who like tear-jerking anime must give it a try, and even those who generally don't watch these types can also try it—it won't be a disappointing experience.
