Synopsis

During recess, Kasumi Nomura—a quiet middle school student who suffers from terribly low English grades—watches her classmates Hanako Honda and Olivia playing a noisy hand-game. Olivia, a blonde-haired transfer student of American descent, appears to win effortlessly, prompting Kasumi to approach her with a desperate request: if Kasumi agrees to play traditional games with her, will Olivia tutor her in English?
Unbeknownst to Kasumi, Olivia is a complete fraud. Despite her Western appearance, she was born and raised entirely in Japan, cannot speak a single word of English, and only pretends to struggle with Japanese to maintain her foreign persona. Meanwhile, the hyperactive, wealthy, and utterly bizarre Hanako just wants to play games to become popular, despite having zero social finesse.
To keep their respective secrets and desires alive, the three girls officially establish the "Pastime Club" (Asobinin Shūko), an unofficial extracurricular group dedicated to playing various absurd traditional and made-up games. Behind its deceptive, pastel-toned exterior, Asobi Asobase reveals a chaotic, unhinged comedy filled with grotesque exaggerated facial expressions, surreal misunderstandings, pitch-black humor, and chaotic high school antics.

Hanako, Olivia, & Kasumi: The trio forms the unofficial "Pastime Club" (Asobinin Shūko).
